While taking the daily supplement of ‘boosting the spirit’, a thought was invoked in my conscious mind. Like first thing on any usual morning, I thanked God for the dawn of a new opportunity in life, followed by a series of gratitude for all that is good around me. My routine ends with praying for continuous blessings of flourishing my good fortune. I realised that though every word and every thought involved in the routine was right, none stirred my emotions. In other words, I was feeling a bit ‘bored’ with the affirmations and gratitude – a ritual of mind and not heart. In my experience, boredom is a symptom of pessimism and stagnation. I have always believed that affirmation is just lip service to yourself if it doesn’t resonate with the heart. So, what was my heart, my subconscious trying to show – possible shadows of the coming less favourable events? Or was it something else?
I knew instantly that it deserved further attention. As usual in such scenarios, I sat down to meditate to follow the base of this feeling of boredom.
Like one can still hear the quiet river in the background despite the loud chirping of the birds; I could hear my faint sub-conscious amongst the conscious loud prayers.
The question was- why was I experiencing a lack of enthusiasm with no obvious stimulus for such a feeling? I had no apparent reason to be pessimistic- my family is great, I am still in charge of my own life, I feel I have enough to be thankful to God, etc. So what was this ‘downer’ I felt in my spirit?
Then, the bulb lit – If even good becomes regular, it can turn boring; no excitement left. That’s it- that is it! I opened my own book- ‘The 3Fs of the Law of Attraction’, and re-read the chapter in which I’ve described why rich people get bored despite the ability to buy any tool of entertainment? The reading endorsed what I had temporarily forgotten. Coaching yourself is therapeutic, especially when it is confirmed that you were right all along. It is also called self-analysis.
So, I had established that my life was good enough, for which I was grateful to God, but did it also mean that I had nothing left to aspire to? That couldn’t be right, since life is a constant process of improvement and not being perfect. Perfection is a goal which requires to be chased but not achieved. Also, I still have desires for more in life, even though I am mostly content and peaceful. It meant that I needed to go further and deeper into my mind.
I found that I had recently been focussing too much on how fulfilled I am with a great family, reasonable health, and am financially above water. The message my brain was receiving was that I had reached the highest point and no more mountains remained to climb. So, I had to reset the dial to balance between contentment and evolution. evolve. Evolvement means change and continuously moving forward. I realised that I needed to address two things- Assess, in a positive light of course, how today could be changed for a better tomorrow, and what needs to be done about it. What this means is – there’s always room for improvement, but needs action to achieve it. However, it’s paramount to understand that desiring improvement does not mean feeling deprived of the current situation. Those who love cooking, like myself, will appreciate this example- When I cook vegetable biryani, I use a variation of different vegetables and even masala every time, so it tastes a bit different every time even though the dish remains the same. Life is just like the dish of biryani – onions and carrots one day, and onions and cauliflower another day, in the mix of the same basmati rice. It keeps the excitement in the action of cooking every day. Life too needs to be spiced up with different flavours every day; the variation doesn’t have to be drastic, but subtle.
I was already excited for the day to start with a variation- I added a new activity to my schedule and I re-arranged the furniture in my lounge. I also decided to wax the Chesterfield sofa. This changed my day from boring to exciting, especially when my family liked the room with the altered look. For some, this change could be enough but for others not much. The point is to add a little variation in your life daily, however minute it might seem to be on the surface. The implication would invoke positive feelings. Add what you would love to and prevent boredom building.
