Here’s another experience to share with my beloved readers to improve focus. Many spiritual seekers who are in the process of finding the pivoting point for enhancing concentration often begin to feel frustrated when someone or something interrupts their meditative state of mind; sometimes to the point of arising anger. Don’t feel guilty about it. While learning everyone is a student, and one is allowed to err. Progress is gradual and there is a restorative remedy for the perturbed focus, so no panic.
General sources of distraction could range from having a lively family, a busy neighbourhood, attention seeking pets, or simply one’s own wandering thoughts. As a result, too many voices merge to make one big noise! It’s not pleasant, and tries one’s patience, to say the least, especially when someone is already struggling to gather focus.
This is exactly what I went through for a long time, before getting an enlightening answer from within while meditating one day.
I realised that every voice and sound is like a test for me, to verify how far I’ve progressed. So, I began to prepare for the mandatory assessment.
It really tried my patience at first, but gradually I accepted the reality that it all started with the big bang, and ever since sound is part of our life, and we can’t escape it- so embrace it.
Though every sound is not a noise, every noise has a sound in it which doesn’t need to be anti-focus.
In fact, it can be quite the opposite. I remember from the days I used to learn classical dance in India, I loved the ‘Juggalbandi’- literally, it means ‘interlinked twins’, defining the duet performance of music or dance, or both together. According to my favourite discipline of classical dance tradition, I remember dancing to the beat of the tabala (kind of Indian drum), whereby it exhibited a healthy challenge between the instrument and the dancer- both sides showing (off) their talent. The tabala would play a beat and in turns the dancer would play the same beat with the bells on her toes. This gave me an idea- why not play a juggalbandi with the noise that is perturbing me. For example, if the noise was a song being played loud, I would recite my prayer in the same tune, or just treat it as the background music, as in a restaurant while eating. If we can chat and eat with noise around, then why not meditate too? If it were a motorcyclist creating a big racket, then I too could raise my vibration that resounded in my heart. Do you remember being in a party with blasting DJ? I’ve had serious conversations with colleagues or family members despite the noise during the such parties. How come? Because it was an important conversation which had to be done, regardless of the venue or environment. Then, isn’t communicating with yourself and the Universe/God as important? The trick is to follow the sound inside the noise. This technique helped me a lot to accept the noise with an altered sound.
Once I began to hear my thoughts louder in my mind, the noise outside became more and more muted. From this point onwards, I started to take charge of my inner environment to ensure that these loud thoughts remain positive.
As I became progressively attentive to myself, it enabled me to focus despite the dissonance of the outer world. I felt happier, calmer, and certainly closer to my own spirit. My growing confidence endorsed upon my belief that my Nirankar is as happy with me as I am with myself. There is a lot of depth in this statement, and I shall elucidate the thought in the next post. Soon.
I would be lying if I said it worked overnight. Truthfully, it took further perseverance and regular practice. Eventually, I realised that the outside voices didn’t matter, the blissful serenity of my mind was the new DJ of my inner environment. The juggalbandi became a solo act of my heart-bells and Universe’s tabala.
Not only did I feel happier, calmer, and more confident, but there was a reward at the end of my hard work- God blessed me with a bigger accommodation whereby now I have my own study. I manifested the quiet, when the disquiet-ness didn’t affect me. Isn’t this the essence of Law of attraction? You get what you think, and become one with what you desire.
If I can do it, anyone can too. I am still learning and a spiritual trainee, but I feel confident that I shall continue to grow since I have a firm but fair, and a very capable guru- My Nirankar, my God, my Universe.
Remember, focus is the foundation on which spiritual growth is built. Begin with tolerance, grow patience, and learn to accept the environment around. If your efforts are sincere, the surrounding obstacles will disperse soon and serenity will manifest. However, nothing would change without investing in hard work and honest commitment first.
For further support on learning practical ways to build a wholesome ‘I’ to manifest desire, you could read my book – ‘The 3Fs of Law of Attraction: Failing, Falling, Firming’.
